University Student Fellowships

In 2008, the EPS wishes to award 4 University Student Fellowships for Euro 6,000 each.  The fellowships are intended normally for students enrolled in Masters courses (second cycle, post Bachelor, pre-PhD) as recognition of academic excellence for promising young physics students.

Conditions for participation
Students must be enrolled in an EMSPS institution in a physics degree granting course at the Masters level or equivalent
Third cycle students are not eligible
Students can receive an EMSPS fellowship only once.
Students who have received grants from other bodies are eligible.

Grants are normally for a full academic year (10 months max).  Grants for one semester (5 months max) can also be considered depending on the project.

Selection procedure and criteria
Students must show why they need to study in the host institution, and selection criteria will be based on courses available, project possibilities and academic and scientific excellence.  The student must submit a research project (max 2 A4 pages).  The student must indicate the length of the mobility period and justify the benefits to their physics studies in terms of course work and research.

Letters of acceptance from the host and home institutions must accompany the request for a fellowship.

Time Period
Applications for the school year beginning in September 2008 must be received prior to March 31 2008.  Decisions will be communicated by 30 April 2008.

Grants for Pre-university International Physics Competitions

The EPS will provide grants to organizers of international physics competitions (Olympiads, tournaments and another international contests or other international events) promoting physics based on work of school students.

Two types of grants are available:

  • General Purpose Grants are available to international physics competitions organized in Europe.
  • Travel Grants for the participation of teams from Europe are available to international physics competitions organized anywhere in the world.


Conditions for participation
The physics competitions must be international in character.  The participants in the competition are normally secondary school students.

Selection procedure & criteria
Applications will be reviewed based on the quality of proposal, quality of event, international character  of the event, international reputation of the organizers, number of participants, number of countries participating in the event.

Applicants must indicate which type of grant they are applying for General Purpose Grants or Travel Grants.  All applications must be accompanied by background information explaining the benefit of the event, international distribution of the participants, number of participants, and basic rules of the event and the url of the event.  The application should be a maximum of 4 A4 pages.

The maximum amount per grant is Euro 2,000 and the applicants should indicate the amount requested.

Special Regional Projects

The EPS is willing to consider financing activities that fall outside the existing grant schemes.  These grants should not normally be used to finance events that have been (or would be) disqualified from other granting schemes.  The grants are for Physics related events with an international dimension.  EPS participation is necessary.

These grants are available to national societies and regional societies for special physics activities with an international scope, which could include national physics competitions, seminars, exhibitions, publications etc.

Open to EPS Member Societies and Regional Physical Societies

Selection procedure & criteria:
Where another grant scheme is available, the applicant must use that scheme.  Projects are to be described on maximum 4 A4 pages.
