The leading research in chemistry as well as its infinite applications to our everyday life will be discussed during the 5th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress, in Istanbul 31 August – 4 September. More than 1100 contributions will be presented during this high profile event gathering more than 1500 chemists coming from almost 70 countries, not only from Europe but from all over the world.

The immense possibilities of chemistry being presented at this 5th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress are of great relevance not only for the research community. These societal possibilities, which cover most of the the EU2020 flagship initiatives, are also cleary meaningful for the environment, health, food, the industry, SMEs and energy production. Ultimately, this EuCheMS Chemistry Congress matters for every single one of us.

Topics range from nano-sciences to green energy

Hot topics that are gathering scientific attention include, amongst others, nanometer-scale structures and their possible applications in electronic, in sensing and in biomedical applications, presented by EuCheMS Lecturer 2013, Prof. Maurizio Prato. Carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, might open new doors for gas storage, pharmaceuticals, interneuron communication, spinal cord repair and in obtaining hydrogen from splitting water, thus creating new possibilities for a greener society.

The congress will also host a session with the European Commission's Joint Research Centre  on nanomaterials safety and training and education regarding quality assurance for analytical measurements as well as a session on the European Research Council's activities, presented by its President, Prof. Bourguignon.

With their eyes set on the future of chemistry, the European Young Chemists´ Network will develop a wide range of activities aiming at the employability of young chemists: several workshops, talks and even a meeting with possible employers will take place during the Congress.

The best will be awarded. This Congress will also be a place for acknowledging excellence in research and in promoting chemistry. Some of the awards delivered will be the Young European Chemist Award; the European Sustainable Chemistry Award, which will be given to Prof. Walter Leitner and Prof. Jürgen Klankermeyer; and the EuCheMS Award for Service, which will honour Prof. Luis Oro.
