Two post-doctoral positions in condensed matter theory

Posted By Administration, 07 October 2016

University of Bristol (UK) and University of Kent (UK)

Deadlines: 19 October 2016 and 16 October 2016

Two post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) positions are available at the Universities of Kent and Bristol in partnership with the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. We are looking for enthusiastic candidates to pursue work in condensed matter theory. You will carry out research on broken time-reversal symmetry and topological order in superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, competing orders, multi-band pairing and/or lack of inversion symmetry.

Both posts are available as part of the collaboration “Unconventional Superconductors: New Paradigms for New Materials”. The team have recently been awarded an £844,000 (FEC) grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

The Kent PDRA will carry out group-theoretical analyses of experimental data and develop novel theories of unconventional electron pairing, analytically and numerically. The Bristol PDRA will carry out Density Functional Theory calculations of the band structures of materials exhibiting novel forms of superconductivity. Both PDRA's will then work together to combine this information to create detailed models of specific materials. They will then use these models to predict the results of experiments.

For the advertisements of each of the two positions and application forms go to

Candidates whose background could be suitable for either post are encouraged to apply to both Kent and Bristol.

The universities of Kent and Bristol are equal-opportunities employers. Women, members of ethnic minorities, and members of other under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Call for nominations for the EPS CMD Europhysics Prize 2016

Posted By Administration, 27 January 2016
Updated: 28 January 2016

Dear EPS members,
Dear EPS friends,

The EPS Condensed Matter Division Europhysics Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Condensed Matter Physics has been presented annually since 1975 by the European Physical Society, and has become one of the most prestigious awards for condensed matter physics in Europe.

The selection committee is pleased to request nominations for the 2016 EPS Condensed Matter Division Europhysics Prize. The prize laureates will receive a cash award, as well as an invitation to attend and present their work at the 26th Condensed Matter General Conference (CMD 26) that will take place in Groningen, the Netherlands, from September 5th through September 9th, 2016.

The EPS Europhysics Prize is awarded in recognition of recent work by one or more individuals in the area of condensed matter physics, and, more specifically, work leading to advances in the fields of electronic, electrical, and materials engineering that, in the opinion of the Society's selection committee, is of particular scientific excellence and merit. Recent work is defined as work that has been completed within the 5 years prior to the award. The prize may be awarded for either pure or applied research, at the discretion of the Society.

Only complete nominations will be considered. For a nomination to be complete, it must include:

  • a complete CV
  • a publication list (5 pages maximum)
  • an indication of the three most relevant papers to the nomination
  • a description of the work justifying the nomination (2 pages maximum)
  • a suggested short citation

Nomination may be made online by using the nomination form that can be found here.

The deadline for the receipt of nominations is
 January 31st, 2016.

Nominations may also be made by email by sending all materials in a .zip file to d.lee@eps.org or by regular mail to the address below:

Europhysics Prize 2016
EPS
6, rue des Frères Lumière
68200 Mulhouse, France

Please keep your nomination confidential. Proposals will be acknowledged but not followed by any further correspondence.

On behalf of the selection committee and its chairman, I thank you in advance for helping us.

Yours sincerely,

David Lee

CMD25 - JMC14: third call for contributions to "Condensed Matter in Paris"

Posted By Administration, 14 April 2014

Dear colleagues,

With the mark of 400 contributions from all over Europe, in all of the 38 topical sessions, passed,

Condensed Matter in Paris CMD 25 – JMC 14

is picking up momentum fast. Your peers have already registered, but you too can still be part of

this large condensed matter physics meeting, that unites CMD 25, the Condensed Matter confe-

rence of the European Physical Society EPS, and JMC 14, the 14th “Journées de la Matière

Condensée” of the French Physical Society SFP.

From August 24th to 29th, Condensed Matter in Paris CMD 25 – JMC 14 is expecting to host more

than 1000 European Condensed Matter physicists in sunny Paris, and is therefore the place to be.

Submission of abstracts to Condensed Matter in Paris is possible until April 15th, 2014.

The program of Condensed Matter in Paris will comprise 6 plenary and 15 semi-plenary invited

Talks, round table discussions on physics start-ups, the future of physics publishing, and women

in physics, and, of course, the 38 Mini-colloquia (Topical Sessions).

You may submit your most recent work to the Mini-colloquium of choice on the conference website,

  http://cmd25jmc14.sciencesconf.org/

Registration rates have been kept very modest so that all who wish to attend can do so. Moreover,

extremely advantageous rates are available for (graduate) students and young researchers.

     Please circulate this information

On behalf of the Program Committee and the Local Organizing Committee, the SFP and the EPS,

I am looking forward to welcoming you in Paris this summer

      Yours sincerely,

      Kees van der Beek

Chair, Condensed Matter in Paris CMD25 – JMC14

The official language of Condensed Matter in Paris CMD25 – JMC14 will be English.
